How to Use the cPanel Terminal

The cPanel Terminal is a powerful tool that gives you direct command-line access to your hosting account. While it may look complex, this guide will walk you through using it step by step—even if you’re a beginner.

  • Open your browser and visit your cPanel login URL.
  • Enter your username and password to access the dashboard.
  • In your cPanel dashboard, scroll down or use the search bar to locate the Terminal icon under the Advanced section.
  • Click on the Terminal icon to launch the command-line interface.
  • If it’s your first time using the Terminal, a warning message will appear.
  • Read the notice carefully, then click Proceed to continue.
  • You now have access to a full-featured command-line environment.
  • You can run commands such as:
    • ls – to list files and folders.
    • cd – to change directories.
    • pwd – to print the current directory.
    • nano filename – to edit files directly from the terminal.
  • Be cautious: some commands can affect critical files or system settings.
  • Use only trusted commands if you’re new to Linux or command-line tools.
  • Avoid commands like rm -rf unless you’re absolutely sure of what you’re doing.
  • Backup important files before making major changes.

The cPanel Terminal gives you advanced control over your hosting environment. With a little practice, it can help you manage files, troubleshoot issues, and execute tasks much faster than using the graphical interface.
